Learned: Deeply read; showing or requiring learning
(Oxford English Dictionary)
As you consider and pursue your future educational goals, consider what real learning is and what you’re supposed to use it for!
The Lord God has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens me morning by morning. He awakens my ear to hear as the learned.
(Isaiah 50:4 NKJV)
I value my education and yet realize I am not learned—certainly not in God’s ways.
This passage gives me comfort when I face people around me who are weary of struggling to live as God calls, weary of whatever their reality looks like. I seldom have anything sensible or truly wise to say to them, but I know God has specific words of wisdom, challenge, love, grace, etc. for their situation. He makes me “learned” in His ways so I can offer those words to others He places in my life to minister to—in season. The verse also reminds me of a greater gift—one I particularly need to pay more attention to—that, “morning by morning, He awakens my ears to hear as the learned.” He awakens me to hear truth and not be tricked by lies, to hear real needs, to hear as God would hear—with all of His wisdom. That’s an incredible promise! It is a promise, not just to Isaiah, but a promise for me, too, and—it’s a promise to you, too.
May God give you learned ears and voice!!!
