"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace" (Numbers 6:24-26).
To turn your face toward someone is to give them your wholehearted, undivided attention, not the casual listening of a preoccupied mind. A turned face says: “I have nothing else to do, nowhere I would rather be—I’m fully here for you.” (Turning your face away from someone would mean that you are withholding favour or blessing - a sign of disapproval.)
This is how God pays attention to us. Not only does He turn His face towards us, He shines on us. A shining face is the image of delight—the face of a proud parent beaming at a child; the face of a groom watching the bride come down the aisle.
That’s a picture of how God looks at us; with great love. God pays attention—close attention to us as evidenced in these Bible verses:
The very hairs of your head are all numbered (Luke 12:7).
God cares about the smallest details of our lives (Matthew 6:25).
Next time you hear the benediction at church, don’t let the words pass you by. Let them, instead, remind you of how tremendously God loves you!
